Happy New Year, everyone!! *confetti shoots everywhere*

You're probably expecting some grand 2017 celebration post, but sorry, that's not until Saturday. What I am giving you today is a book review (I know, less exciting), but I did LOVE THIS BOOK. so that's something. Here we go, This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab.

by Victoria Schwab

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwaba young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

I really liked the characters because they were full of depth, and there's nothing I dislike more than shallow characters.

kate harker is really bitter and mean, but that was part of her story! She forces herself to act like this in order to impress her dad! Because at the end of the day there's a soft-ish person under there. I still loved her even though she was pretty *savage* (haha) at times.

august flynn is a monster, but all he wants is to be human. he's good-hearted and a nice monster in general. You might be thinking at this point, yeah, yeah madeline. i've heard this trope a million times now, but what really interested me about August was the type of monster that August was. He kills people with a song on his violin. Now that's pretty different, right? I LOVED IT SO MUCH. I will confess that I liked him better than Kate...

what i loved even more about this story was the fact that august and kate did not fall in love blah blah blah. they just became good friends. i was afraid they would fall in love, and it would bring the intenseness of the story down 10 notches, but it didn't happen, and I LOVED IT. it was epic.

i will admit that i was confused until like 20% through the book. i didn't even realize that this was a dystopian world. i thought it was just a fantasy book.

it did take me a little while to settle into the story, but when i did, it was awesome. the world building in this book was much better than 90% of other dystopians i have read.

this world was gritty and violent, and it was really interesting to read about it. even though it was a dystopian world, the book didn't focus on the past (and how the USA went downhill), just on the present and the characters. that was good.

honestly, there was not that much plot-intenseness-adventure in this story. don't get me wrong, there was still a lot going on, but the reader was mostly learning about August and Kate as characters. BUT the fact that there was less plot did not bother me at all. i loved learning about the circumstances that August and Kate were facing.

even with the kind of lack of a plot, I read this book in one sitting.

me: ok, let's sit down and start this book. i'll go running in 30 minutes. *thirty minutes later* well, this book is interesting. i'll go running soon.
*two hours later* my sister: madeline, GO RUNNING.
me: NO. go away. i'm reading.

the end of the book was not an intense cliffhanger, but it wasn't satisfying either. i can see that the book has much more room for development in Our Dark Duet.
meanwhile: Our Dark Duet has moved up to the very top of my TBR List of 2017™

this book has made my favorite books of all time list, no doubt about it. usually i'm pretty ranty (yes that's a word) about my favorite books, but i read this book over a week ago and procrastinated on doing this review. so I may not have sounded that excited about this book. I STILL LOVED IT SO MUCH THOUGH.

also: I loved this book that I both read it and listened to the audiobook. i am thoroughly obsessed.

have you read this book? did you love it? let me know in the comments? (i must have someone to rant with!)

xoxo, madeline

  1. eeek the lettering on that cover is so cool *hyperventilates bc pretty letters on book covers*

    1. i know!! i loveee the lettering on the cover!

  2. OMG I AM LITERALLY THE SAME FOR ALL OF THIS!! TSS must be one of my favourite books in all the universe...despite it not having that much going on plot wise AND I was super confused for the first 20% too.😂 But then I just fell in love with August and Kate?!? (And I'm so glad they had such an epic platonic relationship. <3 Although I do kind of ship them so I don't mind if they get together in the sequel! But at the same time I hope they stay friends haha.) And the monsters and the violins and just afjdksalfd IT WAS SO SPLENDID. I'm glad you loved it!

    1. I KNOW. I love the characters so. much. I was glad that nothing happened romantically in this book, but I would actually be fine with it in the sequel! i love the monsters and violins so much! :)

  3. I adore how you set up your posts! Your graphics are literally the cutest things <3

You definitely know how to lure a girl in with Crooked Kingdom in your pictures as well. You've got me so hyped for this book! I'm honestly so down for main characters just being friends. It's on my shelf, although I'm doing the things I always do and keeping the best till last - which is going to take ages because I have around 124 books on there . . . Will look forward to it, until I get around to it!

    1. thanks!! :)
i love that the two main characters are just friends so much! hope that you enjoy it as as much as i did!

getting kind words and comments on my posts is like waking up early in the morning and realizing that I have a few more hours to sleep in. getting comments from you guys is the best, and it always makes my day :)
